Pigmented Lesion Treatments

Among the effects of aging that we would all like to avoid are pigmented lesions and corn formations. If you’re uncertain what these terms mean, you would probably know them if you saw them. Pigmented lesions are dark brown or black spots that appear on the skin as you age. Moles, age spots, and melanoma spots are all examples of pigmented lesions.

Pigmented lesions are usually benign, but can occasionally be cancerous. There are a number of treatment options available for pigmented lesions, depending on the specific lesion and its location on the body. Topical creams or gels can be effective for small, localized pigmented lesions. For larger or more widespread lesions, laser therapy may be recommended. This treatment option uses concentrated beams of light to target and removes the pigmented cells.

Corns come in a number of different forms, including hard and soft calluses caused by excessive pressure, seed corns, which form in overly dry skin, and uncomfortable subungual corns which form in the nail bed of your toenails or fingernails. These unattractive and uncomfortable lesions and corns can, fortunately, be treated with a couple of different minimally invasive methods.

Not only are these pigmented lesions unattractive, making your skin look mottled and old, but they can also be dangerous. Moles with uneven and discolored edges may be cancerous. Untreated, cancer can spread to other parts of the body. Getting pigmented lesions treatments may not just be a matter of vanity and self-confidence; it may also be a matter of preventing serious health risks.

The two most common treatments for pigmented lesions are intense-pulse light (IPL) therapy and laser treatment. When you choose IPL treatments, pulses of wide-spectrum, high-energy light will be directed at the affected skin to destroy the damaged skin cells and stimulate new skin cells and collagen production.

Laser treatment is similar to IPL therapy, but the spectrum of light is much narrower, and the ablative laser pulses break the pigmented lesions up into tiny fragments. Your immune system then takes over, washing the damaged cells away and disposing of them.

This is actually a very similar procedure to that performed in laser tattoo removal. Several sessions are necessary to fully remove the damaged cells, and sessions should be spaced at least a week apart. This will reduce the likelihood of blistering and/or scarring.

In some cases, laser resurfacing is necessary. With this treatment, the epidermis is stripped away by the laser, layer by layer, over several sessions. Newer, younger skin takes the place of the damaged cells, and collagen production is stimulated in the process. This results in younger, smoother, and more even skin color and tone.
